The first crisp of Fall
There are many comfort foods and everyone has their own special ones.
. Later in the season, when it isn’t so “new”, I like to add rasins or dried cranberries to the recipe. But for now with those first Maine apples of the season, it is just plain apple-crisp like grandmas have made for centuries.
Apple Crisp
Into a greased casserole put 2 or 3 cups of pealed thinly sliced apples – try to use ones that remain firm with cooking.
Pour almost 1/2 cup water of the apples and sprinkle liberallly with cinnamon
Mix in a bowl – best when done with your hand:
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup butter
Mix until crumbles and sprinkl all over the apples
Bake at 400 degrees for about 35 minutes (or until apples are tender)
Great hot or cold – with ice cream – with milk – with whipped cream
I also tried it with a drizzle of my homemade elderberry syrup – Yummmmmmmm!
